Chasing the AI Boom: How to Get Exposure to Anthropic Before Its Big Debut

The anticipation surrounding Anthropic is reaching a fever pitch following the filing of its S-1 paperwork, signaling that the AI startup is entering the final stretch toward an initial public offering. While a firm date hasn’t been locked in, industry chatter suggests a debut on the Nasdaq under the ticker ANT could happen as early as before Thanksgiving. This timing has sparked a flurry of questions from everyday investors eager to get in on the ground floor, hoping to avoid paying the premium often associated with public debuts.

For most people, however, the door to direct pre-IPO investment remains firmly shut. History shows that early access is typically reserved for hedge funds, institutional players, and accredited investors who can secure shares at insider prices. We saw this play out with SpaceX, where those with early connections paid significantly less per share than retail investors did once the stock hit the open market. This gap creates a powerful sense of missing out, though focusing solely on these early gains often ignores the volatility that follows a company’s transition to public trading.

Despite these barriers, there are roundabout ways to gain exposure to Anthropic right now. Some investors are turning to specialized vehicles like the KraneShares Public-Private AI and Technology ETF, which holds pre-IPO shares of Anthropic alongside other private ventures. Another strategy involves buying into established tech titans that have already placed massive bets on the startup. Both Amazon and Alphabet have poured billions into Anthropic, meaning shareholders in those giants technically hold an indirect interest in the AI developer’s success without taking on all the risk of a single speculative stock.

While chasing an immediate windfall is tempting, seasoned experts warn against rushing into high-profile IPOs without a long-term strategy. New stocks are notorious for wild price swings; using SpaceX again as an example, shares soared well above their opening price only to plummet later, punishing those looking for a quick flip. With historical data showing that several of the largest IPOs ever actually yielded negative returns over five years, caution is key. Following Warren Buffett’s philosophy is perhaps safest here: if you aren’t prepared to hold an asset for ten years, you probably shouldn’t own it for ten minutes.
